Biola University Ammonia Slip

Biola University operates Three Caterpillar Spark Ignited Engines. Applications Solutions was contracted to investigate and solve a high Ammonia slip issue associated with the Johnson Matthey SCR Systems on two of the Caterpillar Engines.

Applications Solutions determined that the atomizers were not functioning correctly in the high exhaust temperatures and that the mixing length was inadequate for complete pyrolysis of the Aqueous Urea Solution into Ammonia. Applications Solutions designed an air cooled replacement atomizer/lance. Application Solutions also performed a computation fluid dynamic study (CFD) to analyze the pyrolysis mixing tube and found that the uncharacteristically short mixing tube was stratified.

Applications Solutions designed and supplied a replacement counter flow mixer which, in conjunction with the air cooled atomizing lance, resulted in ammonia slip within specification.
