Circa 2009 Simsa S.A. moved a 20MWe Thermal Power Plant from Turners Falls (MA) to a Texitle Mill in Guatemala.
Application Solutions was contracted to investigate an issue that had the symptoms of an Induced Draft Fan that was undersized.
Application Solutions determined that the ID fan was correctly sized, and that underlying issue was that the coal feeding the traveling grate boiler was stratified resulting in an asymmetrical distribution of coal on the grate. The asymmetrical distribution of coal on the grate produced a high pressure area which coincidentally was in close proximity to the pressure transmitter that was the process variable for the ID fan. The client installed a $250 distributor plate in the days silo and the issue was largely solved. The complete solution would have included the consistent purchase of spec coal.
